From September 2025, the University of Northampton will begin using Cite Them Right Harvard, and UON Harvard will be phased out. However, if you are a returning student you can continue using UON Harvard for the duration of your programme, if you prefer.

There are some specific benefits to Cite Them Right Harvard. For example, if you want to use a reference management tool, such as RefWorks, MyBib, Zotero or Mendeley, you will find that Cite Them Right Harvard is provided as an output style across all of these tools. Cite Them Right Harvard also incorporates the use of DOIs (digital object identifiers) into the reference as standard, where they are available. Overall, Cite Them Right Harvard is very similar to UON Harvard, but there are some small differences, so we have created a comparison table,
Cite Them Right Harvard is very similar to UON Harvard, but there are some small differences, so we have created a comparison table, below, showing the key differences. However, there are many style variants of Harvard referencing, and you should focus on being consistent in the style you use and on providing accurate referencing that enables your reader to easily and unambiguously locate the source you used. This is more important than strict adherence to a specific Harvard style variant.
