What is a shelfmark?: Home

Finding a book from the number on the spine

What is a shelf mark and where do I find it?

In academic libraries, books are shelved by this number and not the title, or the author.

Books that focus on a precise part of a topic will have a longer shelf mark using a decimal point, and sometimes the first 3 letters of the author's surname. This helps keep everything organised and easy to find.
