When can I present in Collaborate?

Your permissions to use the presentation features in Collaborate depend on how you are accessing it and the options your tutor or staff member has chosen. Your tutor may enable permissions for you to present to the rest of the class during a session. You may be placed into breakout groups which will automatically enable you to use the presentation permissions. Sometimes you will be provisioned with a separate Collaborate room which has full permissions available by default. Below are some of the ways to use the different presentation options available to you at these times.

Sharing your screen in Collaborate

You will be able to share your screen in Collaborate if your tutor has given you permission or if you are in a breakout group.

Locate and open the Collaborate Panel in the bottom left of the screen.

Go to the third icon along the bottom of the panel which features an arrow.

Select Share Application/Screen from the list.

Select Entire Screen.

NOTE: If you are using a Mac, you may need to allow permissions for Chrome to access your screen. Please see this FAQ for further guidance: My Mac computer will not allow me to share my screen on Collaborate. How can I fix this?

Select the thumbnail preview of the screen you wish to share. This needs to be done even if you do not have multiple screens connected. The Share button will be available once you have selected the screen and it has a blue outline. Click the Share button when you are ready.

Your entire screen is the first heading

Your screen will now be displayed and may be repeated as shown in the image below. Navigate to another browser tab or launch a program in front of the browser and continue running Collaborate in the background. Whatever you view on your screen will be displayed to the other participants in the Collaborate session. Be careful not to show sensitive information, such as your emails.

The Dostre effect appears on screen while viewing the Collaborate room.

Sharing PowerPoint and other files in Collaborate

You will be able to share files in Collaborate if your tutor has given you permission or if you are in a breakout group. The steps below detail how to share PowerPoint, PDF, or Image files.

Open the Collaborate panel at the bottom left of the screen.

Select the third icon labeled Share Content which features an arrow.

Select Share Files.

Share files

Either drag and drop the file into the drop area or click the browse button to select the file from your computer.

The add files link is a drop-area as well

During upload, the panel will show the file as first uploading and then converting.

You will not be able to select the file until it becomes a link

Ensure that the file is selected and use the Share Now button underneath it.

The Share Now button is underneath the element containing all files.

Select the thumbnail preview to show the file to all users. If you have uploaded a PDF or PowerPoint file, select the slide or page you wish to show first.

Slides are numbered in sequence

With the file showing to all users in the main window, it is now possible to navigate a PowerPoint or PDF file using the arrow keys below the current image.

Navigation arrows can be selected with keyboard controls and are labeled as Next or Previous Slide.

When you are finished, you can either use the stop sharing button in the top right of the screen or move straight on to share the next resource.
