Information for Staff

Generating a score with Turnitin grading forms

If you wish to build up a score against certain criteria, then a Turnitin grading form may help you do so in a transparent way. At UoN, the criteria used could be the learning outcomes or a further breakdown of those learning outcomes for the assignment, with a suitable weighting. Both comments and a score can be added against each criterion. The total score possible should always be 100. With the grade centre set to use the Undergraduate Letter grade, the score will automatically convert to a letter grade for both student view and for sending to the student records team.

NOTE

Please ensure that you have the appropriate letter grade schema applied to the grade centre column. See the earlier section of this guide 'Setting up the gradebook' for further information if you are not familiar with this feature.

Creating a Turnitin grading form

Turnitin grading forms can be created when first setting up a Turnitin assignment, or by editing an existing assignment. Please see the links for relevant sections of this guide on creating a Turnitin assignment or editing a Turnitin assignment.

In the Turnitin settings screen, expand the Optional Settings section and use the button Launch Rubric Manager.

""

The Rubric Manager will open in a new browser window.

Click on the Rubric List icon and select the option Create new grading form from the menu.

The create new grading form is the second option in the menu list

Edit the title of the grading form so that you can locate it easily later on. Enter a title and optionally a description for each criterion or learning outcome. When using the form to build a score, it is essential to record the maximum points possible in either the title or description for each criterion. This will then be displayed to other markers and the students.

Each criteria has a text entry field for a title and a description. The total points possible is at the end of the description in brackets.

Ensure that the checkbox to enable scoring is ticked. This is located at the bottom of the form.

The enable scoring check box is in the footer of the Turnitin frame and should be ticked by default.

The save button at the bottom of the form will commit your changes. It is recommended to save regularly while you create the form.

The option to save is in the footer of the Turnitin frame

Once you have saved your Turnitin grading form, you can attach it to multiple Turnitin assignments to use for marking. Ensure that the grading form is correct before you begin to use it, as it cannot be easily edited whilst in use. Once it is attached to an assignment, all instructor users of the NILE course can see and use it during the grading process.

Attaching a grading form to a Turnitin assignment

Turnitin grading forms belong to the person who created them. Once a grading form is attached to a Turnitin assignment, all instructors on the NILE module are able to use it for marking. The guidance below shows you one way to attach a Turnitin grading form:

Turnitin grading forms can be attached when first setting up a Turnitin assignment, or by editing an existing assignment. Please see the links for relevant sections of this guide on creating a Turnitin assignment or editing a Turnitin assignment.

In the Turnitin settings screen, expand the Optional Settings section and use the pop-up menu to select your grading form.

""

NOTE: A warning is displayed to let you know that attaching a different rubric will delete any previously entered feedback used in any previously used rubric. If this is your first time attaching a grading form or rubric, the warning does not apply. If you did have a previously attached rubric, confirm your changes after reading the message.

""

Use the Submit button to save the changes.

""

The grading form will now be available for all instructors on the NILE course to use for marking.

Marking with a Turnitin grading form

Marking with grading forms provides a structure for comments and scores aligned to a set of criteria or learning outcomes. The points possible per grading form should add up to 100, to allow for the conversion of a score into a letter grade.

In the Feedback Studio view, click on the Rubric symbol from the menu on the right.

The grademark menu is the first section of the sidebar and the rubric option is the third link down

You can either fill out the form in the sidebar panel view or open a new window with a full-size view using the expand button.

In the sidebar view, the points possible that you entered in the title or description for each criterion, are displayed in the lower section of the panel.

Enter feedback comments and a point value for each criterion. When ready, use the Apply to Grade button to save the score as the grade for that student.

The sidebar header contains the link for expanded view and the button to apply the grade, the first section has the form to fill in, and the final section has the criteria description entered when it was created.

The expanded view has all the same features, but might be a little easier to navigate than the side panel.

The expanded view has a table with the criteria description as a heading for each row, followed by columns for the score and the comment fields. The total score and button to apply the score to grade are in the footer.

The chosen feedback will now be allocated to that submission. The other grade tools are also available for use, including overall grade, quick marks, and feedback summary.
