Introduction to Turnitin rubrics

A qualitative rubric can provide quick, standardised feedback to students during the grading process. Students are then able to easily view an overall indication of their levels of achievement against the grading criteria. UoN recommends that these criteria align with the learning outcomes for the assignment. This section shows how to create a qualitative Turnitin rubric from the templates provided.

LearnTech does not recommend Turnitin rubrics for scoring and generating a gradeIf you wish to build up a score against a list of criteria, consider using Turnitin grading forms instead, which are covered in the next section of this guide, 'Using Turnitin Grading Forms'. This section shows one way to create a qualitative Turnitin rubric.

NOTE: Turnitin rubrics belong to the person who created them until they are shared to an assignment, or shared via the export/import feature.

Creating a Turnitin rubric

Turnitin rubrics can be created when first setting up a Turnitin assignment, or by editing an existing assignment. Please see the links for relevant sections of this guide on creating a Turnitin assignment or editing a Turnitin assignment.

In the Turnitin settings screen, expand the Optional Settings section and use the button Launch Rubric Manager.

The Rubric Manager will open in a new browser window.

Click on the Rubric Options menu icon and choose either the Undergraduate or Postgraduate rubric template from the list. The templates show [shared with you] in the title.

The shared rubrics are at the bottom of the list of available rubrics and options

Once selected, make a copy of the template by choosing Duplicate this rubric from the same menu.

The option to duplicate the rubric is the third item in the menu list.

The settings of the rubric should be left as they are, i.e. the scoring options at the bottom of the rubric should display 0 which provides you with a qualitative rubric for feedback.

Edit the main title, criteria titles and descriptions, and any cell descriptions by selecting the relevant areas and typing directly into them. You can copy and paste from another document.

The Save button in the bottom right corner is necessary to commit your changes. Consider saving regularly while creating your rubric.

Once you have saved your Turnitin rubric, you can attach it to multiple Turnitin assignments to use for grading. Ensure that the rubric is correct before you begin to use it, as it cannot be easily edited whilst in use. Once it is attached to an assignment, all instructor users of the NILE course can see and use it during the grading process.

Attaching a rubric to a Turnitin assignment

In the Turnitin settings screen, expand the Optional Settings section and use the pop-up menu to select your rubric.

NOTE: A warning is displayed to let you know that attaching a different rubric will delete any previously entered feedback. If this is the first time a rubric has been attached to this assignment and marking has not yet started, you can safely ignore the warning. If there was a previously attached rubric, confirm your changes only if you are sure this will not affect the work of other markers on the module.

Use the Submit button to save the changes.

The rubric will now be available for all instructors on the NILE course to use for marking.

Marking with a Turnitin rubric

Marking papers with a Turnitin rubric is a quick way to provide feedback. LearnTech only recommends the use of Turnitin rubrics for qualitative feedback. The below guidance shows how to give feedback using a Turnitin rubric:

In the Feedback Studio view, click on the Rubric symbol from the menu on the right.

The grademark menu is the first section of the sidebar and the rubric option is the third link down

You can either use the sliders to assign the correct levels of achievement for each criterion or click into the expanded view.

In the expanded view, select the relevant cells of achievement for each criterion and use the Close button when finished. There is no save button, as changes are saved automatically.

The chosen feedback will now be allocated to that submission. The other grade tools are also available for use, including overall grade, quick marks, and feedback summary.
