Understanding how a NILE course works

The main parts of a NILE course are:

  • The Navigation Bar
  • The Course Content area
  • The Details & Actions menu

The Navigation Bar

When you enter a NILE course, you will land on the 'Content' area of the course. If you select any of the other links in the navigation bar, you can come back to the content are by selecting 'Content' from the navigation bar. You will probably spend most of your time in the content area of the course, as this is where you can access most of your teaching and learning materials. As well as the content area of the course, the following areas of the course can be accessed from the navigation bar:

  • Calendar - view any items in your course which have a date (please note that this does not link to your class timetable)
  • Announcements - view the announcement that have been sent from this course
  • Discussions - access any course discussions
  • Gradebook - view your grades and feedback for this course
  • Messages - view any messages that you have been sent from this course
  • Groups - view any groups that you are a part of in this course

The Course Content area

The Course Content area is where you will spend most of your time in your NILE courses, as it is where all the teaching and learning materials in your NILE course are. This part of the course will be different for all courses, but there are usually some common elements.

The first two items will normally be:

  • About this module - in here you will find important information about your module, including the module guide, contact details for your lecturers, and the module reading and resource list.
  • Assessment and submission - on here you will find the submission points for your module assessments, along with information related to the assessments for this module (e.g., assessment briefs, submission instructions, and deadlines).

Click on these areas of the course, and they will expand.

You can then select the individual items to view them.

Following the 'About this module' and 'Assessment and submission' areas of the course will be the main teaching and learning materials and online activities for this NILE course. Your teaching staff will be able to explain more about these parts of the course. And progress tracking will allow you to keep track of which parts of the course you've started, which ones you've completed, and which ones you haven't looked at yet.

The Details & Actions menu

From the Details & Actions menu you can access the following:

  • Class register - see who else is enrolled on your course, and view their profile photo, their pronouns, and their name pronunciation guide if they have added these to their NILE profile.
  • Progress Tracking - this will be automatically turned on, and allows you to keep track of which parts of the course you have started, completed, or not looked at yet
  • Class Collaborate - from here you can access any online classes that are held on Collaborate
  • Books & Tools - you can access your module reading list from here

More information about how to use Progress Tracking and Collaborate is available via the links below.
