Introduction

On this page we explore critical thinking. There is a link to a resource on the Skills Hub, an interactive book with activities, and some thoughts on thinking critically about literature.

Critical Thinking

Thinking deeply, analysing and evaluating are all part of critical thinking. We think critically when we make every day decisions (for example, when we decide what to pack to take away with us). We look for evidence, we question, consider and compare, and we come to conclusions. When writing critically, we move beyond just describing things.

  • The link below takes you to a resource which shows how you might develop a descriptive bit of writing into a more critical/analytical piece. Follow the rows across from left to right.
  • Below the link, there is also a critical thinking interactive book, with some activities to practise these skills.

Being critical when it comes to the literature

It's important you read critically too, and that whatever source type you are using, you don't miss the opportunity to critique and evaluate it.

Make sure you identify, and write about, strengths and limitations. Consider how sources fit or connect with other literature.

Crucially, when writing about a strength or limitation, tell us why or how it has that strength or limitation, and what impact that strength or limitation has. Why are you telling us about it? How does it connect with what you are saying, or how does it impact how you interpret what it is saying?
