Use of AI Tools in Academic Work - Citing and Referencing Guidance v1.2

Ethics, Transparency and Academic Approval

Any use of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, DALL.E 2. Midjourney and Google Bard, in academic work must be undertaken in a manner which is ethical and transparent. Additional information on this can be found on the University Position on Artificial Intelligence (AI) web pages.

You may use AI tools and sources in your work unless tutors have indicated otherwise, but all such use of AI must be acknowledged, cited, and referenced, and in many instances an appendix should be provided, in accordance with the use cases outlined below.

This guidance for University of Northampton staff and students has been adapted from guidance provided by University College London (2023).

It should be noted that AI and the use of AI productivity tools are evolving rapidly.  The guidance on these support pages will evolve accordingly.
