Academic Librarians

Academic Librarians can support you with searching for and finding evidence and information, and referencing. They offer 1-to-1 tutorials which you can access online.

Collaborate

Collaborate is the name of the online virtual classroom you will use for online sessions. You will find a link on your NILE site (see also NILE on this glossary) which will take you to the Collaborate classroom. You click on the link at the time of the session.

Language Development Centre

The Language Development Centre has a team which supports students with their English language for academic purposes.

Learning Development

Learning Development support all students in the university with their academic skills. This could be time management, critical thinking, writing, maths and statistics, or many other areas. They offer 1-to-1 tutorials and drop-ins, both of which are available online.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes will be shared with you within your modules. Sometimes they are referred to as 'LOs'. They outline the learning you will do in that module, and within your assessments you will be asked to demonstrate your understanding of them. Aim to understand their meaning clearly - ask if you're not sure. We also have a list of the key words used in Learning Outcomes.

Library

Here is the link to the homepage for the library's website.  There for links to other areas of the library, and up to date information.

NELSON

NELSON is the name given to the online electronic library search. On it, you can search for books, articles, and others kinds of evidence. You can access your own library account, see reading lists, and request sources through the Inter-Library Loan system. When you are able to log in, make sure you do so each time you use it, as this will make sure you get access to the stock. We have a guide available to help you log in.

NILE

NILE stands for Northampton Integrated Learning Environment. It is a platform where you will be able to access your learning materials, information, your Collaborate classroom (see 'Collaborate' in this glossary) and other useful links. You will need to log in to be able to access your NILE sites. You may have a number of sites within your NILE - often these match with your modules, and you may have general ones as well.

There is a video about NILE available.

For support with NILE, you can access the help pages run by the LearnTech team.

Reading List

Your reading list is created by your tutors. They choose relevant texts and sources, and link them together on a list which you can access via your NILE site (see 'NILE' on this glossary). You can also access them through the 'reading list' tab on NELSON (see 'NELSON' on this glossary) by searching with your module code. Reading lists are a brilliant place to start for access to relevant evidence for your understanding and your assignments. They connect to NELSON so you will be able to find the sources in NELSON through your list.

Skills Hub

The Skills Hub is a website created by the Library teams. It has advice and support for academic skills of all sorts, including critical thinking, academic writing, searching for literature, note-taking, statistics, reflection, and much more. It is also the place to find your UON referencing guides. It's a really useful place to browse, and you can also head there for support with specific areas.

It is also linked from your NILE site (see 'NILE' in this glossary).
