Use of AI tools within your work

UON takes an acknowledgment-based approach to use of GenAI tools within student work.

Permitted uses of GenAI tools and how to acknowledge their use can be found on the University's UON Guidance on Generative AI web pages.

When should I directly reference an AI output in my work?

You should cite and reference an AI generated output in your work if you are discussing the AI output directly in your work as a source. For example, an AI generated poem, image or programming code that you are critiquing in your work. This is because you are using the AI output as an information source, rather than as a tool.

Examples of how to reference AI outputs is provided in the guidance on the Cite Them Right platform.
