Reading List Best Practice

Tagging

Tagging is a clear way of explaining to students how to prioritise their reading. It also communicates to the Library potential demand for resources so we can purchase additional copies as required.

  • Essential: a core text that will be referred to repeatedly throughout the module. Library and Learning Services will prioritise essential texts to make sure there are sufficient copies for the number of students on the module

  • Recommended: a source that can provide more context to a specific topic, one that is recommended by tutors. The Library will ensure there are enough copies

  • Wider reading: these titles are additional reading that can help students explore the background and context of the topic

  • Texts without tags will be treated as wider reading, we keep an eye on the usage of all texts and will increase numbers according to demand.

It takes time to purchase and subscribe to stock for the Library. Wherever possible please allow plenty of time for the Library to acquire the stock needed for teaching. If you have an urgent request, please contact your Academic Librarian to discuss and we’ll do our best to facilitate.

I'd like to speak to an Academic Librarian

The Academic Librarian team will be happy to and you can email librarians@northampton.ac.uk
