Library Support for Students

Your University ID card is your Library card.

For any issues with borrowing, renewing, reserving or returning items, contact libraryteam@northampton.ac.uk

Loan Allowances and Borrowing

  • Borrow up to 20 physical items using the self-service machines
  • Unlimited access to electronic resources 
  • Education students may borrow an additional 10 School Experience items
  • Foundation Level Teacher Training students have a standard loan allowance of 20 items

Loan durations

For the main UON Library collection, the loan types are:

  • Standard loan: No sticker (up to 4 weeks)
  • 1-week loan: Yellow sticker, black writing
  • Shelf Reference: White sticker, red writing (for use in the Learning Hub only)
  • School Experience: Pink sticker, 1 week (standard) and 1 term (Education students)

Items can usually be renewed unless requested by another user.

Renewals

Renew up to 15 times (unless item is requested by someone else).

School Experience:

  • Standard students – 1 week, renewable twice
  • Education students – 1 term, renewable twice

To renew:

  1. Log in to NELSON
  2. Go to My Loans
  3. Click Renew next to the title and the new due date will appear

Reserving a book that's out on loan

If an eBook is available, access it instantly under 'Available Online'.
For physical books:

  1. Log in to NELSON, find your book and click the title to view full details of the book
  2. Click Reserve if all copies are on loan
  3. Add a 'Not needed after' date (optional)
  4. Click Send Request

You can check progress by going to the 'Requests' tab on your Library Account. You’ll be emailed when it’s ready to collect from the Reservation Shelf (2nd floor, near printers and laptop cabinets). Issue it to yourself using a self-service machine.

Returning books

Return books 24 hours a day using:

  • The returns machine on the Ground floor (removes items from your account instantly)
  • Quick return points on second, third and fourth floors (items will be removed from your account within 72 hours)
  • Outside drop boxes (by main entrance and 24hr entrance)
  • Free postal return service

School Experience Kits and Medical Models must be returned to the Help Desk (Ground floor) during staffed hours.

Lost or damaged items

If you have damaged or lost an item you have on loan, contact libraryteam@northampton.ac.uk with your ID and book details and we’ll assess if repair or reuse is possible before considering replacement. If a replacement is required, a replacement charge may apply.

Requesting books not included in our collections

If you cannot find books, chapters or articles that you need for your academic studies, you can request them via the Inter-Library Loan service.
