These pages will help you plan, create, edit, store and share video content. Students enjoy being able to see a process or service in a video. Making a video doesn’t have to be a difficult process, with available training and these guidelines to help you plan.
You must attend the UON training ‘Record and edit a short video using tools available to you’ before you start.
Then you can plan your script and location, and shoot the scenes or screen capture you need. You then chose an editing tool and edit your footage. You can host your video in Kaltura and use it in web content, or use straight into social media. There are lots of training, teams and tools that can help.
Are there any Learning Objectives? Plan from the start if there is something you want students to be able to do / to know by the end of the video.
Write a script in advance so all important points are covered. It is advised to storyboard your videos.
Use positive language such as; yes, can, will, definitely, absolutely, certainly.
Avoid negative words such as; no, won’t, shouldn’t, can’t, don’t. Avoid ambiguous language such as; maybe, might, could, perhaps. Also avoid sarcasm or sayings, even well-known UK sayings will not be known to international students.
Don’t offer any excuses about services but be realistic about what is available and offer solutions to any issues.
When referring to internal staff, refer to the role and not the person. Use generic ways of contacting the position such as; ‘If you need to report a broken light fitting, then email lls_environment@northampton.ac.uk

Plan to have no other people (students, staff, visitors) visible or plan for your legal responsibility to have signed and dated Performance Release Forms from all those people who feature in the videos. Consider the environment you are filming in, and the message that this space sends. You should prep any workspace that will be visible and consider background elements (for example for cleanliness or clutter).
If there is a voice over or dialogue, make sure you are well prepared and have a quiet space.
