Information for Staff

H5P

H5P provides staff with the ability to create and share highly interactive, media rich, mobile friendly content with students. H5P content can include interactive videos, interactive presentations, branching scenarios, and games, all of which can be built and accessed via NILE.

Getting started with H5P

H5P is integrated into Blackboard Learn to make it easy to share content with your students. You can access H5P wherever the Content Market is displayed within a course. For example, the main content page of a course, or within a document item of a course.

NOTE: You cannot create H5P content on the main H5P website. You will need to be enrolled as an instructor on a Blackboard Learn course to begin.

To add an H5P item to the main content page of a course, select the plus icon where you want the H5P item to appear, then choose the Content Market option.

The Content Market shown in the add new menu.

To insert an H5P item into another item using the text editor, select the Insert Content menu and choose the Content Market option.

Once the Content Market page has loaded, select H5P from the list.

The following screen shows your personal area on H5P. Any content stored here is only visible to you until you choose to publish it to your course.

Select the Add Content button at the top of the page to see the available items.

The available content types will be listed with a single sentence description. To see more information about a content type, select the Details button next to it.

A longer description and some screenshots will be shown. To see an example of the content type in action, select the Content Demo button:

You will be taken to the H5P webpages for that particular content type. Most of the webpages include both an example of a finished item and a link to H5P's tutorial on how to create your own item:

Available Content Types

There are around 40 different content items to choose from. You may find the following list helpful as a starting point to explore. The list has been loosely split into teaching and learning tasks to guide you. The links will take you to the relevant page of the H5P website, where available, for information only. Please see the earlier section of this guide on how to create content from within a Blackboard Learn course.

Instructional content

These item types can be used to bring multiple resources and interactive elements together to create cohesive learning modules that encourage student participation.

Learning Aids

These items incorporate interactive elements to promote active engagement by the student. They are designed specifically with the aim of increasing student retention and understanding.

Synchronous feedback

These items provide live interactive spaces for students and can be utilised to check on background knowledge or understanding during either a classroom or online session. These are premium features and as such are not directly documented on the main H5P website, so this list does not include any links.

  • The Chase - students compete against each other to answer questions.
  • MultiPoll - facilitate polls or debates with the option to include various multimedia.
  • Emoji Cloud - students select emojis in response to a statement or question.
  • Word Cloud - students can type responses or choose from a list of options.

Important notes

Here are a few notes and tips to keep in mind as you begin to use H5P.

  • All H5P content is created via the content collection in Blackboard Learn. You will need to be enrolled as an instructor on a Blackboard Learn course to use H5P.
  • H5P is not suitable for summative assessment. You cannot limit the number of attempts taken by each student and cheating is also possible with a hack. It is therefore best used only with general activities, or low stakes formative assessment.
  • It is possible to create gradebook items so you can check in on student progress or levels of achievement.
  • It is also possible to turn off the creation of gradebook items if you would like to keep your gradebook more streamlined. Reports are still generated and stored on H5P which you can view by revisiting the content item.
  • You can create automated feedback for most of the interactive elements, so it is possible to let content run as an asynchronous activity on your NILE module.
  • You can choose to show students their own reports about their activity and results for each item.

Most of these features can be controlled in the 'LTI settings' section at the bottom of each content creation page, as shown in the screenshot below:

The LTI settings can be found at the very end of all page options.
