RefWorks

A guide to using the RefWorks reference management software.

Uploading files

RefWorks allows you to upload two different file types into your RefWorks account to create reference. You can upload PDFs that you have previously downloaded and upload .RIS files that you have downloaded from different databases.

Uploading PDFs

If you already have PDFs of sources that you want to reference you can upload these directly into RefWorks. This can be useful for sources such as journal articles and electronic reports. RefWorks can often read the metadata contained within the PDF to fill in the different details you will need to write a reference.

1. Log into your RefWorks account

2. Click the + icon (labelled 'Add')

3. Click 'Upload document'

4. Use the file explorer to select any PDFs that you want to upload into RefWorks and click open

5. RefWorks will upload the documents and try to fill in the reference details (author, date etc.)

6. Check the details of your references by clicking it in RefWorks and checking over the details. If edits/corrections are needed click the pencil icon in the top-right corner to make these.

Importing .RIS files

RIS files are a special filetype used for references. Some databases do not allow you to do a direct export to RefWorks so instead you can download the references as an .RIS file and then manually upload them into RefWorks to produce your references.

1. Log into your RefWorks account

2. Click the + icon (labelled 'Add')

3. Click 'Import references'

4. Use the file explorer to select any .RIS files that you want to upload into RefWorks and click open

5. Open the drop down menu next to 'RIS Format' and select 'RIS Format'

6. Click import

7. Check the details of your references by clicking it in RefWorks and checking over the details. If edits/corrections are needed click the pencil icon in the top-right corner to make these.
